What Can’t You Live Without? You Tell Me!

To name one thing that you can’t live without is rather difficult to do. Maybe it would be better to ask what six things you can’t live without? First of all lets eliminate our automatic washers, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and the other fantastic appliances we are blessed with.

Can't get enough of this!

Can’t get enough of this!

Another subject which would be better done by itself is what foods we can’t live without. Some people will tell you the “incredible edible egg,” some couldn’t live without cheese, that amazing food that comes in all shapes, colors and smells, there are lots of pizza lovers out there, those who love mashed potatoes, and peanut butter lovers would stand-up and be counted. So, it’s o.k if you want to include food on your list of six.

We all will agree that we can’t live without water, food, shelter, love, and good health. But let’s get a bit more

Can't live without these!.

specific. I would say hundreds, maybe even thousands, maybe more, would say they couldn’t get along without their cell phones. Makes you wonder what they did ten years ago when they didn’t exist?

I was reading a list of some of the things people couldn’t live without and included were gummy bears and the ultimate were chocolate covered ones. I will eat a gummy

bear, now and then, when we stop for lunch at Golden Corral, and I slip a spoonful on my ice cream. I’ve never heard of chocolate covered ones. Well, it looks like we’re back on the subject of food, again, and that’s o.k. because seldom does a person list his likes without mentioning food. Someone said any form of caffeine, Diet Coke was frequently listed and coffee shows up again and again. People can’t live without these.

If you want to really be creative, try listing your likes beginning with the same letter in the alphabet. I tried and here’s my list:

A refreshing drink.

A refreshing drink.

friends, food, fun, flowers, family and Fresca, one of my favorite sodas. I found a  list beginning with the letter “B.” Keep in mind that this isn’t my list, although I might list books and bicycles as something I wouldn’t want to live without. Here it is: bass, booze, books, and bikes. Be creative with your list and yours may turn out something like this: kisses, sunlight, oceans, pasta, radios and hand sanitizers.

I’ve given some thought to my list and found that I can’t imagine living without my husband, family, friends, home, love, and, sorry, but I must include the internet. However, my list really isn’t complete without what’s most important to me and that’s my relationship with God and His Son, Living without 13 Jesus Christ. We are all made in the image of God, so there is a great void in our lives without Him. Life wouldn’t be worth living if God wasn’t there to turn to, to trust, and to rely and lean on. The Bible says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 94:19.  Funny, though, when you do become a follower of God, your desires change and probably your lists do, too. If joy is on your list, here’s how to get it: “When anxiety was great within me your (God’s) consolation brought me joy.” – Psalm 37:4.

In  wrapping up this shirlandyou, I turned to the serious side of the subject because God is such a big part of my life. But I want you to have

  1. Things I cannot live without would also include God. I would not be able to live without him! He has blessed me with a wonderful husband, three beautiful daughters, three wonderful son in laws and five absolutely wonderful grandchildren! They are my life! Gods word the bible, soft ice cream and fresh veggies!

  2. I believe we could live without a lot of things we currently have, it would just cramp our “normal” life. However, since you asked, a comfortable bed, sun rise, sun sets, a support group of family and friends and easy ways of travel are all things I sure would like to keep. Thanks for the thought provoking question. It will echo in my mind as I move through the days ahead and realize how blessed I really am.

    • God gives us so many wonderful things we don’t even ask for and take for granted, like sun rises and sun sets. How true about the comfortable bed. And I wonder if you are thinking of Florida when you say easy travel. Thanks for writing and giving us more to think about.

  3. Things I can’t live with out…. The beauty the Lord shows me each and every day. No matter what my day brings he blesses me. Rain, I love it when it rains, Storms are better yet, even at my age now, I get on boots and grab a raincoat and walk around outside or sit on the deck with a blanket. It’s a close tie between Bob my husband of 37 years and my Kitchen Aid food processor. lol Coffee with half & half, my grandchildren, Emily & Mike, mascara, skirts, autumn leaves and a car. Our little pets, Nina, Chy, Lexi, Roxy & Zoey. Garlic, onions and spices. Being alone in the woods, I love to look at trees swaying in a breeze and hear and feel the wind in my face.

    • Hi Deb: I’m getting such wonderful suggestions for things we can’t live without. Yours made me want to go hiking in the woods. Walking in the rain? I’ll have to think about that longer. You’ve always had a great sense of humor, better take Bob over the food processor. I only know Emily and Mike slightly, but this I know for certain, grandkids are wonderful. Write again. I love to read what you have to say.

    • Hi mothermar4: Did you become a mother on March 4? Thanks for offering your choices for things you wouldn’t want to live without. I agree with all of them and the one you tacked on to the end -central heating. I can’t imagine living without it, but many did!:) Brrrrr!

      • No Shirley, I became a mother 41 years ago on the 4th of July. And concerning the central heating…. I very much enjoy reading historical christian fiction. When I read one that talks about living in log houses with only a small cook stove for heat during a blizzard I thank the LORD for putting me on earth in this time in history. 🙂

  9. There are so many things I can’t live without. I’ll have to group them together…so I’m either cheating or being creative. Jesus,Joy,Hugs…Baseball…Music…Nature (mostly birdwatching),coffee, time alone…TV (movies),massaging feet…Library/Books. These are at the top of an unending list. I do each of them everyday except for the baseball which I wish I could watch everyday. There is something spiritual about the sounds and the sport of baseball.

    • If I were to pick a sport to like, it would be baseball. but I could live without it. Your list is interesting and ongoing and I understand, because God has provided us with such wonderful things. Thanks for writing.

  10. i could say ‘all of the above’ LOL
one thing i’ve wondered about was how did we ever make it before microwave ovens??
i first got one in my early 20’s and now 30 years later i wonder how my mom ever got a meal without one!
used to think the same about the vcr and got one of the 1st ones made…back when they were close to $1000…but now i have the dvd/vcr and rarely use it.
thank God daily for hearing and sight!
to be able to see the beautiful sunrises and sunsets and to hear the birds sing and the rain falling on the leaves is a blessing we too often take for granted!
thank you for the thought-provoking post!
